Snooker Shorts Top 5

This list has been updated following the World Grand Prix 2020

This Top 5 is purely subjective and based off how I think the following players have performed in the past season (or in the past few tournaments). This list will normally be updated after every tournament although, considering a lot of players don’t participate in every single tournament, chances are that list remains the same for at least a few tournaments at a time.

1) judd trump

Yeah…he’s still the best in the world. Many thought that after his drought following the Gibraltar Open last year, Judd Trump wouldn’t be able to replicate or even come close to that level of success once again. Trump has proven already in the season thus far that not only is he still the man to beat, but he is the at the top of the playing field by quite the margin.

Already claiming three ranking titles this season so far (English and NI open plus the World Grand Prix) and reaching a further two finals, Trump has propelled himself further in the rankings and continues to raise the bar that others can’t seem to jump high enough to reach. The only question is…how many more trophies will belong to Trump in the rest of the season?

2) neil robertson

Neil Robertson may not have had the most successful start to his 2020/21 campaign having come runner-up in two event finals however, he brought out the goods when it mattered at the first Triple Crown of the season. Robertson was involved in one of the classics of the season so far as he captured his third UK Championship, beating Trump on the final colours.

Having had a great run over the past couple of years, Robertson has managed to continue his great run as he frequently reaches the latter stages of ranking events, and is able to hold back the big names from adding to their trophy cabinets.

3) mark selby

Mark Selby continues his great run of form following the World Championship as he establishes himself as one of the handful of players on this season’s winners list. Selby won the first ranking event of the season with the European Masters and followed this up with his recent and dominant win during his successful defence at the Scottish Open.

The most impressive is his significant difference in match-play as Selby has begun to regain the confidence that helped him win five rankings events in 2016/17. Selby’s improvement in long potting and overall table presence has made him a formidable force once more on the snooker table.

4) ronnie o’sullivan

The current World Champion hasn’t won any titles in the season just yet, but one has to appreciate how far he makes it into events without really trying. O’Sullivan has made two ranking finals as well as a semi-final in the season where it’s only taken the players within this list to really be able to stop him.

Even though O’Sullivan aims to win whichever tournament he competes in, it’s quite astonishing to see how he’s able to keep approximately 95% of players at bay as he cruises in lower gear. His game may not be as reliable as it once was, but I think that just gives those that are below him in the rankings that much more to think about.

5) kyren wilson

Probably one of the most consistent performers of the season so far, Kyren Wilson has had nothing but a string of quarter-finals and a Championship League win since his venture to the end of the World Championship. Wilson has done extremely when it comes to performing against the bigger players, aided by his Warrior mentality and consistent cue action.

Wilson is proving to be a top contender and familiar face in every event. He’s only a few big wins away from potentially opening the floodgates and showing us what he’s really made of. And when that time comes, he’ll become one of the regular winners, similar to those above him.
